9 Aug 2019 Today it is 10 years ago there was for the first time an email was sent to the First People of the Kalahari, FPK, in Botswana. The first visit to Botswana was end December 2009/ January 2010. On 12 May 2010 Stichting ter ondersteuning van de Eerste Mensen van de Kalahari Botswana, SEMK Botswana, Foundation supporting the First People of the Kalahari Botswana was established, registered as an ANBI foundation (Public Benefit Institution) and registered with the Chamber of Commerce. The intention of the foundation was to support the Bushmen, which for a few years was the main goal. We discovered that it was difficult to maintain contact with the people in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and outside. The next aim was to see how education was given, as there were rumours that Bushmen children were discriminated at (boarding)schools. It also appeared that the quality of education was below standard in the whole of Botswana. I noticed that on the whole the Bushmen were looked down upon. Pre school education, if it exists, is below standard. We realize that our efforts to support the Bushmen little difference has made on Botswana. But we have made several people happy with sponsoring their study (Quotation from a young man: "I am happy to know that thee are people who considere me to be a human being and not an animal."); approach them as a friend (Quotation from a Botswana friend: "We respect white people because they treat us as equals."); or just to have a short conversation and give some advice (During a chat with a sales woman at a market I showed her how to mend a tear in a children's jacket.). Throughout the years many good contacts have been made. |
