SEMK Botswana Annual report 2023

Making good contact with Bushmen has still not been successful. As an alternative, we decided to make contacts with Botswanans in the field of education. That also was not succesful. People do not understand Dutch teaching methods. The problem is that I cannot be in Botswana for more than 6 weeks a year, due to family circumstances. Maybe if I had been there for half a year every year, we would have been able to understand each other.

The student for whom we have paid the private school fees since 2014, finished her secondary education in December 2023. She indicated that she would like to stay abroad for a while in preparation for her further study/work career. We invited her and a friend to stay with us from February 17 to May 13, 2024. After three days the friend decided not to go (the plane ticket had already been purchased). The preparations for the trip were very hectic. In addition to buying a plane ticket and taking out insurance, a bank account had to be opened for the student, and a visa had to be applied for in Pretoria, South Africa. Due to old information on the internet about making an appointment for the application, this was nerve-wracking. Her brother had to come to Pretoria with her, because of the many kidnappings in South Africa. Overnight stays in Pretoria had to be booked, a courier had to be found to take the visa to the student in Botswana.

A list of interesting activities in the Netherlands was made.

Two Botswana newspapers were read regularly and some articles were included in the SEMK Botswana website journal. Relevant articles were sent to stakeholders.

Finances. No money was raised. Money was sent to the student for the visit to the Netherlands to buy winter clothes, a suitcase etc. The brother of the student received compensation for the days he could not work.
